Arietta, A Savage Fairytale
This is the final cover design, it is a graphic representation of the story tagline "Blood is on the Leaves".  The logo for Arietta was created when I first wrote the story in 2000 and the rest of the cover images were bought through stock photo sites.  I created the Blood Leaf logo (on back) in illustrator, this is the icon for the story and is featured on almost all marketing material.
The following designs were designs that were developed for projects, or for fun and practice. I wanted to convey the feeling and content of the book with just the cover. I designed the layout, logos and font selection.  All photos are copyright of their perspective owners.
This is the original cover for Kids on Bikes 2.0.  There was going to be a new cover illustration by Heather Vaughan, but the layout and design was approved, I found out later that the publisher changed their mind and this was the only way anyone was going to see this design.  This design feels more like Kids on Bikes far better than the cover the publisher ended up choosing.
I saw this artwork by Jocelyn Joret and it just screamed Kids on Bikes. I updated the design I originally created and added my original tagline that I like far more than the one the publisher chose.
I often peruse the local Barnes and Noble to find new books to download from the library.  I passed by the original cover to this book many times and I thought it was a comedic parody due to the cover design and this story is far from it.  I made this cover immediately after reading the book to give it a cover that accurately reflects the story and feels right.
I saw the movie before I read the book and really wanted to give it a shot.  I really dug how this came out.
I saw this amazing painting by Connor Sheehan and really just wanted to use it in a book cover.
Dark Orbit is a real book by Carolyn Ives Gilman.
ALIENS: Hadley's Last Hope is not a published book.  I saw this powerful painting by Benoit Godde and really just wanted to use it in a book cover.
I came up with the back description, it's something I would want to read.
A Scanner Darkly is my favorite book cover yet. I used 5 paintings by Andrew Salgado to create the cover of this mock-up. I was aiming to capture the multiple personality aspect of the story and
I think I did that quite well.  I was completely surprised by the final product because it is really different from my other designs in a really interesting way.
This is for the fourth book in my favorite series ever; God Emperor of Dune.
I ran across this amazing illustration by Devon Cady-Lee and just had to make this cover.
The Dune logo design, font design and layout is mine.
Armor is a favorite book of mine, the powered armor on the cover is from a game called Sector 7.
It landing or jumping in conjunction with the logo give it the combat feel I was looking for.
Roller Ball Murders I wanted to see if I could create something fresh and modern using the original 1973 artwork.
Firestarter I saw this illustration by Russ Mills and it screamed Charlie McGee and I had to create this cover.
I wanted to use only the colors that were from the illustration itself and I think it came out really well.
Night Watch was a cover that I wanted to attempt for a long while and it only happened because I saw the first bird painting by Adam S. Doyle. I have been trying to mix more elements into my designs and this book is a clear example of that. I think it came out really well and I am happy with the design.
Day Watch This is the first time that I have created two books from the same series, I wanted to make sure that I kept the feel of the Night Watch book while giving Day Watch it's own personality.
I kept many of the same elements in place to create a consistency that I will carry through to the third cover; Twilight Watch but not for a while.
JAWS is a very personal book for me, it was the first book I ever read.  I wanted a cover that when wrapped around a book would look like the
Great White was moving forward and the name Jaws on the spine is in it's throat.
Fight Club is another book that I am extremely fond of. I came across the paintings by Andrew Salgado and when I looked at his site, I saw this painting and it immediately reminded me of
Edward Norton and I decided to use this for a mock cover. I was aiming for a more simplistic design that relied more on the painting as well as the Fight Club logo to get the point across.
